Praying for Our Missionaries: Weakening Dollar Hurts Missionaries
The weakening U.S. dollar is having a profound effect on missionaries scattered all over the world.

"It makes things more expensive in their local currency and increases their cost of living," said Bill Goodman, MTW's director of field operations. "This problem is widespread throughout the world—it's not just Europe that is being affected."

While previous economic changes have caused support shortages for missionaries in the past, the breadth of this problem is unprecedented.

Christianity Today recently reported that "according to the U.S. Center for World Mission, many missionaries are finding their dollars worth 8 to 12 percent less than they expected this year. In Europe, dollars have lost 45 percent of their buying power since 2002."

MTW recently lowered the amount of support missionaries must raise by decreasing the administrative fee for long-term missionaries and reducing health costs. But those gains are quickly being eroded by the falling value of the dollar. To combat the problem, many missionaries are seeking to raise additional support while still on the field—a difficult task.

"We need to ask for prayer for this situation, that God would supply additional funding," says Goodman. "And we need to communicate with churches, so that they can be aware of the pressure on our missionaries right now."

Praying for Our Missionaries: Keith and Debbie Kanavel

Our one year home assignment is almost up. We have received
confirmation concerning the Lord's new direction for ministry among
the French-speaking, Muslim population in Canada. The next few years
will be busy coordinating our missions objective and preparing for
our move. In the interim, we intend to continue with MTW
participating in several short-term assignments. Living abroad and
the transition of our family into US culture has taken its toll and
these next precious few years we hope to assist our children,
physically and spiritually, as they prepare for their adult lives.

Praise we are able to take advantage of the housing market slump by
purchasing our 1st home, as it no longer financially makes sense to
rent.
Praise that our children can live at home, pay off school loans,
continue their education and have time as a family.
Plans, preparation and coordination to leave TX in 2 years for new
work in Canada.
Debbie will be taking courses this summer to renew teaching
certificate; pray for effective teaching job for next school year.
Debbie & Cara will work in NYC this summer with MTW for pre-field
training of other missionary families.
Keith & Colin to travel back to Senegal to sell household items,
vehicles and move some items to US.
That support remains strong during time of transition and we can
garner outside employment to supplement income.

The Missions Committee is pleased to announce support of the Joseph K
family, ministering in Japan. They are hoping to leave in fall 2008
assuming the Lord provides all financial support. The Joseph K
family will join us August 10 to more fully present their ministry,
but in the meantime consider the following and commit to pray:

Japan has the lowest Christian percentage out of any nation in the
world; less than 0.25%. This number used to be 1% but the percentage
has been shrinking.
The Joshua Project lists Japan as the single largest unreached people
group in the world; nearly 130 million people.
The majority (80%) of Japanese pastors are over the age of 50. In
less than 15 years there will be a major shortage of young leaders.
The average attendance at these "dying churches" is 10-20 attenders.
Joe K will serve as a professor of Christ Bible Seminary (English
speaking) in Nagoya, Japan.
He will also serve as President of the newly formed Christ Bible
University focusing on a ministry degree for Japanese Christians and
a Business/English Communications degree for non-Christians.
Land is being secured and funds raised to build the University.
Nagoya is the 3rd largest metro area in Japan; 8+ million and
headquarters of Toyota, Japan's largest company.

Praying for Our Missionaries: David and Eowyn Stoddard (Berlin, Germany)
Just a quick update as to what is going on this side of the pond. 50 people went on our church weekend retreat, double last year's number. It was a good mix between Christians and unbelievers. Some exciting highlights:
A non-Christian man said that he feels like God is pursuing him and he desires to learn to apply faith.
A high-powered non-Christian lawyer said "If God were to encounter me now and speak to me he would probably say, 'Your work is first in your life, you need to change your work habits, perhaps give up your job completely and become a missionary.'"
Following a time of prayer, a non-Christian lady wept over the brokenness in her own life and longing to know a God who heals.
A former world champion relay runner said "My experience and notion of church, sermons and worship had nothing practical to do with life. But what you preach, the Bible, loving your neighbor and living it out authentically, that is something new for us" (speaking for he and his wife).
The Spirit moved people to make bold requests in prayer; one lady who helps out in our children's ministry prayed with tears for her unbelieving boyfriend.

Pray for the following:
Salvation for the unbelievers/seekers among us.
Conclusion of the 6 week parenting workshop; for understanding of God's principles and His worldview.
Fellowship grill party for church members to continue relationships with participants of the parenting workshop.
Renovations are done by target July move-in date; walls are down, ceiling dropped and it already looks very bright.
Ben Graber and Anna Oates to organize the English Camp the end of August.
For success of the English Camp and for the Spirit to draw in many neighborhood kids.
Short-term team from the USA to raise all their support to come and help at English Camp.

Praying for Our Missionaries: Ron and Erin Hesse (Jayapura, Papua)
Talk about transitions...

Nicki is graduating from high school! She was born September 4, 1989, in Manokwari, Irian Jaya, Indonesia; grew up in a jungle village and small town; traveled in jet planes, small planes, very small planes, ocean liners, mid-sized boats, speedboats, motorized canoes, a pecky-pecky, motorcycles, buses, cars; schooled at home, in US public schools, and at an International School; heard three languages spoken around her form the time she was born - English, Indonesian, and T.

Now to leave home, family, friends, pets, country, culture, languages and to the USA! Nicki plans to spend the summer in Texas with her grandmother and working at a vet clinic. Then she will attend Bluffion University in Ohio to major in writing.

Our organization will be restructuring and adopting a new strategy for ministry, hopefully resulting in greater impact for the Kingdom. We will be going, as a small family into the village in June and July.

- Praise for good language help from Agus who left his family for a month to help with typing, translating text, and answering vocabulary questions.
- Praise form safety when the PC-12 pilot had to do and emergency "wheelie" on the runway to keep the nose gear from collapsing.
- Praise for Nicki's graduation from high school and future plans in the USA.
- Pray for transition in ministry and many unknowns with the restructuring.
- Pray for health challenges.
- Pray for safety, adjustment, and travel in the jungle this summer.

Praying for Our Missionaries:  Lloyd and Eda (Cambodia)
The church-planting project has emerged from a partnership with a local church that has been giving free English classes for the past 6 years.  Many of the students have come to faith and now desire to start a church.  The Kims are assisting with the church plant efforts.  In addition, they are conducting a "Needs Assessment", as they live in unreached villages for several months at a time, to evangelize, develop relationships and determine the local communities physical and spiritual needs.

Pray for:
As team leaders, direction and vision gleaned from Needs Assessment.
Praise as the Knutson family will soon arrive on the field; first family to join the team.
For children's ministry and medical ministry conducted in the villages.
Language acquisition and fluency.
Teaching at the local Bible School and recruiting/mentoring local future church planters.
Developing further outreach ministries in the city, including technology and business relationships.
Spiritual growth and protection of their children.

Praying for Our Missionaries: Jim and Claudia Jung (Sydney, Australia)
How are you up there in Northern hemisphere? It's getting cold here Down-Under and in some places trees have even turned color. It's quite beautiful, and yet it still feels oddly out of season. Hmm... One of the exciting missional concepts is to send "Asians to Asia." In the future, we have a vision and hope to be one of the churches to send out many Asian-Australians to other Asian countries.
We are happy in Sydney and feel like we are rooted down for a long stretch of ministry.
Praise that God has provided opportunity to meet and serve many; church planting is about relationships.
Praise for an encouraging time of learning at the Asia Pacific Leaders' Conference in Thailand.
In June & July we will be taking 2 new interns; pray they will grow more passionate for God's Kingdom through this experience.
The name is official "Harbour City Church." We are trying to gather a committed launch team; some families have already committed.
Student Outreach: officers underwent intensive training in Feb; we're becoming quite multi-ethnic already!
Jim will continue preaching regularly at an ethnic church until July; pray they will find a godly pastor.
We are partnering with others to make contacts with Aboriginal communities. Pray for wisdom & sensitivity.
Our support has fallen below 80%; pray we will not be required to return to the states to raise further funds.
Our 2 year "religious worker visa" is expiring, pray for visa processing for Permanent Residency (Australia allows dual citizenship).

C.J. Mahaney's forthcoming book "Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World" deals with the issue of modesty. It is a pastoral and a practical look at how Christian women should think about 1 Timothy 2:3-10. The book discusses the following topics:

Modesty: God, My Heart, and Clothes (pt. 1)
Modesty: The Attitude of the Modest Woman (pt. 2)
Modesty: The Appearance of the Modest Woman (pt. 3)
Modesty: A Pastor’s Concern (pt. 4)
Modesty: A Word to Fathers (pt. 5)
Modesty: The Right Adornment (pt. 6)
Modesty: The Modest Woman's Allegiance (pt. 7)

There is something here for everyone: young women who desire to honor the Lord and serve their brothers in the Lord, older women wishing to teach younger women (Titus 2:3), Christian fathers with daughters, church leaders with pastoral care, etc. Click here to read excerpts from the book and receive a 35% discount coupon when the book becomes available in September.

Praying for Our Missionaries: Ken & Gwen Counts (Navy Chaplain aboard the USS Truman)
Please pray for the following:
Safe return of the carrier on June 4th.

Gwen's visit back east to visit two ailing parents; Gwen's father's pancreatic cancer has returned and spread to lungs and liver and Ken's father, in a nursing home, is lonely (Ken is an only child).

Praise God work has begun on the BEAMM building move project!  Because of the delays, the building owner agreed to dismantle the building, then donate it in early June.  Bottom line:  nearly the same result with less risk and less work on our part!  Praise God for this outcome and thanks to all who were on stand-by to assist.   In the last week, a small team of volunteers removed over $20,000 worth of fixtures to be used when the building is reassembled in Mexicali.  Pray that the plan to bundle, load, and ship the building in the second and third weeks of June will work out and that transport will go smoothly.

Volunteers are needed to help with the audio ministry, including sound system setup on Sundays, recording sermons, and creating CD's.  If you are interested in ministering in this area, please contact Michael Kay or Jim Toman.

Praying for Our Missionaries:  Juan and Marta (Escondido, CA)
Recently there was a front page article in the North County Times highlighting Juan's ministry. "The target neighborhood is crowded with more than 20,000 people in a square mile of primarily residential and apartment properties......Although Spanish is the predominant language spoken in homes and on the streets of the neighborhood, church leaders said they use both English and Spanish together as a way to help residents understand the importance of understanding both languages.  Using both languages also makes the church more comfortable for children who speak more English than Spanish and easier for their adult parents who may rely more heavily on Spanish." See the article in its entirety on the Missions Table.  Please continue to pray as God is blessing their efforts.
Effectiveness in ministry aimed at struggling Latino families and at-risk youths is spreading its message of hope and salvation from a school gymnasium in one of the city's poorest, most gang-ridden neighborhoods.
Mision Vida Nueva moved their church location to the center of the city's Mission Park area in January so that they could take on poverty, gangs, hopelessness, limited education and racial stereotypes from the inside out.
Besides Sunday services they host free weekly English-language classes, organize monthly neighborhood cleanups, and counsel families and teens on everything from gangs and drugs to marital problems and education.
Pray the church will attract wary residents who are hesitant to accept help; the emphasis is on creating relationships.
Praise that since moving locations, the church has added 4 families to its 50-member congregation.
Besides regular neighborhood visits by church leaders, the church offers community support services such as tutoring for kids, counseling for adults, and small loans to people who have recently lost jobs.
Pray for strength and protection.

We would appreciate more Getting Ready Class volunteers. If you are interested, please see pastor Ken.

Praying for Our Missionaries:  Iain and Barb Duguid (Western Pennsylvania church plant)

1. Praise God for generous financial support from the Presbytery and ARP denomination, which will allow Bryan Miller and Tiffany to come work with us for the first year, with half of his salary underwritten.

2. We have lots of opportunities for ministry and very limited resources.  We are excited for the Millers to join us following their graduations.

3.  Pray that Bryan and Tiffany are able to raise the remainder of their support needs ($20,000; Western PA is much cheaper than Southern CA).

4. Pray for our contacts with non-Christians. A man named Dave came to our study a couple of weeks ago by personal invitation. He was literally shaking as he walked into the house, yet he came and listened to the study. May the Lord open his heart.

5. Pray for our relationship with the other Reformed churches in town, which are greatly unhappy about our presence here.

6. Pray for a number of our students who will be spending the summer on missions trips in various parts of the world.

Praying for Our Missionaries:  Keith and Debbie (On furlough from West Africa)

We have been in Texas on home assignment (furlough) since June 2007.  Unbelievably, only three months remain and there is yet much to do.  We have been on the run going from church to church for several months updating our supporters on the work in West Africa, as well as advising them of the Lord's new direction for our ministry.  We intend to continue with MTW coordinating and participating in several short-term assignments, both in New York and South America, before we initiate a work in Canada among the French-speaking Muslim population.

Pray:
  • That we continue to grow in our understanding of the Gospel and are conformed to Christ's image.
  • For Debbie as she teaches a weekly womens Bible Study.
  • Wisdom and success in training events for a new project we have been asked to assist with.
  • That we will be able to connect with all our supporters by the end of our home assignment.
  • That our support remains strong during this time of transition in our ministry.
  • For personal efforts to supplement our income while here in the USA.
  • For children:  Elizabeth will be moving to Texas and is looking for a new job; Jordan has started a culinary program and is looking for a job; Cara is at the University and is raising support for a MTW short-term summer assignment in New York; Colin is nearing the end of his 10th grade and seeks vision for his future.
