Praying for Our Missionaries (Joe and Juliet Kim in Nagoya, Japan)
Dear Friends,

UPDATE: Happy Thanksgiving from Japan! We're so thankful to God for so many things, but we especially want to thank all of our financial supporters of churches and individuals. We are only here because of God's grace and your prayers/financial support. Thank you again for "holding the rope so that we may descend into the deep." It requires two: one to go down and the other to hold the rope. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

PRAYER/PRAISE:
1. Praise God for a wonderful week at the Church Planting Institute Conference! There were nearly 400 missionaries and Japanese church-planters from all over Japan. Thank you for your prayers for Joe. The joint-session that Michael/Joe led on "Personal Holiness/Discipling the non-Christian" was one of the most attended seminars. View Joe's portion of the seminar at his sermon site: http://jksermons.wordpress.com

2. Praise God for the opportunity for Juliet to be a part of the yochien's Christmas gospel choir along with a few dozen other mothers. This has been a great opportunity to talk briefly about the gospel since the songs are being sung in English and the mothers are seeking to understand the meanings of the songs. Please pray for seeds to be sown.

3. Praise God that Joe's first book, "Reformed Epistemology and the Problem of Religious Diversity" (title pending) has been accepted for publication. It's a book at the intersection of epistemology and the philosophy of religion, and we hope to some day translate it into the Japanese language as a resource for CBS. (The publisher has not given us an exact date as to when it will be released.)

4. Praise God for a wonderful meeting in Tokyo at the Presbyterian Church in Japan's General Assembly, CBI's partner denomination. Joe and Michael came back tired, but full of praise for allowing us to meet and network with so many pastors. Please continue to pray for the churches of Japan. There were over 100 pastors/elders at the meeting and it looked like a senior citizens' gathering since the majority of the pastors were in their 60's and 70's. Please pray for many young Japanese pastors to be raised up for the Lord's work in Japan through CBS.

5. Praise God for allowing Joe and Michael to attend a special luncheon hosted by Onnuri Church from Seoul. There were 120 people there who were either key Korean Christian CEOs with business interests in Japan, or key Japanese Christian leaders/missionaries from the Nagoya area. We were able to share with and meet lots of people with important ties to Japan. Please pray that these CEOs would have a vision for Japan, in particular for the next generation of Japanese pastors and undergraduates by helping us with a building/land purchase.

6. We are praying for 7 donors/churches who are willing to support one of our seminary students on their short-term mission trip to Thailand through a one-time gift of $200-300 each. If you are interested in praying or supporting them financially on this trip, you can find details at the website here: http://cbsthaimission09.wordpress.com. Please feel free to email us if you have any questions.

Your friends in Japan,

The Kim Family

Praying for Our Missionaries: Ken and Gwen Counts (Norfolk, VA)
We had great holidays. All our kids came to our house in Norfolk. I brought my mom up and she shared the happy chaos with us. First Christmas without Dad. Won’t ever stop missing him.

Joel is in the back stretch ready to sprint to High School graduation in June. We are in the college search process. He’s talking like he might just take another year at home to go part time to a community college and work a job and pray for more guidance as to what he should devote his energies to doing. He has said he wanted to study nursing. I think that might be changing. Joel swam on the School swim team. Presently is recovering from mononucleosis. Has made some good friends. Likes going to Young Life on Mondays and Thursdays when he’s not in swim practice.

Gwen attends the ladies Bible study at our church, Trinity PCA. She is also participating in the international students gatherings at Old Dominion Univ. She always makes friends with local Koreans too. Her father is five hours from here. He is battling pancreatic cancer and so she drives up there for short visits each month.

Our ship has been in the shipyard for six months. So we have enjoyed a routine like land lubbers. Soon that will end and we will again be in and out preparing for the next deployment. I am to report to Washington DC in September and will work in the Washington Navy Yard as the Deputy to the Regional Chaplain of Naval District Washington. We have found a house we can rent from friends of our son Nathan.

Nathan is doing well as a Platoon Cdr for the Officers Candidates School in Quantico. He will begin resident studies on Quantico this summer and so we are looking forward to being in the same area and having more opportunity to be near to him. The Lord is working in Nathan’s heart and it is our highest joy to see what the Lord is doing.

Six more months remain for me to serve on this great warship. We have to rebuild ministry from the ground up after six months in the yards. Please pray for the Lord’s leading that we may know how to plan Bible studies and worship programs. Please pray for the Lord to work in the hearts of young men and women and of officers and crusty chiefs to send a revival among us. My Command Master Chief is a wonderful Christian and my in-coming Commanding Officer (CO) is a committed Christian.

Please pray for us that we will be submissive to the Lord and able to do His work.

The New York Times this week reported on the Roman Catholic Church's continuing use of indulgences, which must be earned for the forgiveness of sin's punishment. For them, Christ's death and resurrection are just not enough to free the believers from sin's curse and punishment. In contrast, Shorter Catechism Q.25 asks, "How doth Christ execute the office of a priest?" and answers, "Christ executeth the office of a priest, in his once offering up of himself a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice, and reconcile us to God, and in making continual intercession for us." Read pastor Ken's lesson here why we need Jesus and nothing else to have boldness before God.

Praying for Our Missionaries: David and Eowyn Stoddard (Berlin, Germany)
1. At the end of 2008, our church has decided to move to weekly events. I purposefully say "events" and not services because we will continue to have two church services per month but have added a monthly evangelistic brunch to which we can invite friends and a seminar hour (kind of like an adult Sunday school class) during which we will provide some teaching for believers and interesting topics for unbelievers. Pray that these added ministries would not overload our church but really serve to draw people to Jesus.
2. The young man with whom we were in touch about possibly coming as our pastor has declined. We were disappointed, but know that he made his decision prayerfully and we wouldn't want anything but God's will for the church. Please continue to pray for the man of God's choosing to come in His time.
3. We had a wonderful Christmas Eve service at our church with about 80 people in attendance.
4. The New Year was marked with much sickness in our family. We all got some sort of flu that was going around Berlin and Ethan, our kamikaze 2 year old decided to jump off the top bunk. After a trip to the emergency room, x-rays thankfully revealed no broken bones but he was not able to walk on his foot for about a week. We thank God for protection, as it could have been much worse.
5. A new round of Mama Talk has begun. Pray for the women to become curious about a Christian way of raising children, but mostly about a relationship with Jesus.
6. Many more ministry events are in the planning stages such as 2 English camps, an alpha-type course for unbelievers, a Christian parenting course and much more. Pray that God would remain at the center of all of these ministries and pray for new additions to the church through these ministries.
7. Last, but not least, please pray for us as we contemplate the future. Our time with the Paul church will come to a close in the summer of 2010. We will be going back to the States for a home ministry assignment but have no clue what we will do after that. Some possibilities are: further study for David, i.e., PhD work, coming back to Berlin to assist with the Martin Bucer Seminary, or to go somewhere else in Germany. We need much clarity and a strong sense of calling to whatever the next step will be.
Please pray for Jim and Claudia Jung, who are ministering in Sydney, Australia. They have asked that we pray for those affected by the fire (the Jungs are safe), that the local churches would minister the mercy of God to people during this hard time and that this tragedy would lead to tremendous gospel ministry.

Praying for Our Missionaries: Dave and Darleen Eby (Westminster Theological College and Seminary, Uganda)
Praise for the first college graduation at the new campus. Over 400 people gathered in December to watch the graduation and participate in the dedication of the new campus.

Pray for the college semester that began February 2, that pastors would be educated and equipped to serve in Africa.

Praise that the College and Seminary Trustees recently approved two potentially significant programs. Pray that God would bless efforts to open extension centers in towns and village areas to offer training to pastors and leaders who would not normally have access to theological training. Pray that God would also bless development of a full time residential seminary program, that would allow students to finish their graduate degrees in less time. The plan is to begin this new program in February 2010.

Shorter Catechism Q.22 asks, "How did Christ, being Son of God, become man?" and answers, "Christ, the Son of God, became man, by taking to himself a true body, and a reasonable soul, being conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost, in the womb of the virgin Mary, and born of her, yet without sin." In this week's catechism lesson we discuss the importance of Christ's incarnation. You can read it here.

Praying for Our Missionaries: Joe and Juliet Kim (Nagoya, Japan)
UPDATE: Ohayo Gozaimasu (Good morning) from Nagoya, Japan! What a crazy and amazing week it has been since we left the USA on January 20th. Although we have been here only one week, it feels like we have been here for months. It still feels a bit surreal since all we hear is Japanese. We had so much to do the first week: overcoming jet-lag, getting settled into our home, getting our children adjusted to a cold climate, learning to drive, staff meetings, etc. We have few words to describe how the Lord has moved during this process. It was the Lord that raised up His people and His church to send us to Japan; we did nothing. All of our supporters have sacrificed much to financially support us. Some have given up going out to eat a few meals per month, others have cut down on their entertainment budget, still others have been saving money to support, and much more. We are absolutely amazed at the humble sacrifice you have made in sending us to Japan. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

PRAYER/PRAISE:
1. Praise God for providing traveling mercies to our family. It was mostly an incident-free trip from the USA to Japan with our children.
2. Our one-year-old Evan is sleeping better, but jet-lag has been hard on him and he still has a cold from before we left. Please pray the Lord will heal his little body fully.
3. Please pray for a lot of logistical details to go through. Our household shipment will arrive here in a few weeks, so we're still living out of our suitcases. Things such as getting internet, a cell phone, signing up for a bank account, and the like are all much more complicated here in Japan and we need the help of those who are fluent in Japanese to help guide us.
4. Please pray for Joe as he preaches his first official sermon as a missionary in Japan at CBI's English-language ministry All Nations Fellowship this Sunday (February 1).
5. Please pray for my colleague Michael Oh who will be traveling to Minnesota this week to speak at John Piper's Desiring God Pastor's Conference. Please pray for his wife Pearl who will be home with their 5 young children.

It is one of the vital Biblical truths that Jesus is both perfect and true God as well as perfect and true man. Read why this is an important truth here.

Praying for Our Missionaries: Keith and Debbie Kanaval (Montreal, Canada)
The Muslim world has come to our doorstep. There are more that 140,000 Muslims in Montreal with the number increasing each year. This makes it a strategic city. Last May, as Keith walked through a neighborhood known as "Petit Mahreb" and saw the places and people, the challenge and vision became very real. The goal is for God to grow His kingdom by planting churches in this community. Keith and Debbie are uniquely qualified having numerous years experience with Muslims in Niger and Senegal, Africa. They are both fluent in French and they have the strategy experience to facilitate this new ministry.

Please pray:
- For financial support. Since we have changed direction from West Africa to North America, several churches have discontinued supporting us.
- Open doors to hearts and relationship building in Montreal.
- Preparations including the vital ethnographic research underway.
- For efforts in recruiting a new team, that God will direct just the right workers for our team.
- God would move the hearts of Christians in Quebec and the US to embrace this vision.
- Our family will be settled and stable in the US when we leave for Canada.
- Our marriage to glorify God and remain strong & healthy through this transition.

Praying for Our Missionaries: Dave and Darleen Eby (Westminster Theological College & Seminary, Uganda)
Uganda is a landlocked nation of 91,000 square miles (about the size of Michigan) that rests on the equator in central Africa. The population is about 23 million, with a life expectancy of only 42 years (1 in 12 Ugandans is an orphan). The country and their people are poor, especially compared to American standards: 77% live on rammed earth floors; 92% do not have electricity; the main source of information is word of mouth; only 4.5% have a television. As with much of central Africa, malaria is endemic and represents a significant cause of morbidity and mortality for the people of Uganda. Their main need however is spiritual. There are many churches but the gospel is often compromised. Africa needs trained Biblically sound pastors.

Praise for Dave's recent trip to central Uganda villages where I visited 8 new Presbyterian churches.

Praise that all were very receptive to the teaching from the Word. I preached the gospel using the Five Solas/Alones of the Reformation and people seemed to grasp that the gospel means becoming aware that I am much worse than I ever imagined and much more loved in Christ than I ever dreamed. The biblical gospel certainly produces humility and worship.

Pray for Henry Benjamin Kimera (a WTC graduate and current seminarian) who has planted these eight churches over the last two years. Henry spends much of his time on his 150 cc motorcycle travelling 3-4 four hours on dirt roads to the villages. Henry is a prayer warrior. He rises at 3 AM daily to pray for God's kingdom to come. God is answering Henry's prayers.

Life is very basic and very hard. I saw no other white man for 5 days. About 85% of Uganda lives in villages. It is the old Africa with very little of modern technology. It is full of African Traditional Religion (the worship of good and evil spirits). There is still much discipling to be done in a nation that is said to be 83% "Christian" yet is full of so much false teaching and syncretism (combining biblical and local religion).

Pray as discipling Uganda will not be done until the Basoga tribe (where we were) and the other 51 tribes (nations) here are
taught to observe all that Christ has commanded (Matt 28:19).

Pray God would provide sponsors to pay the seminar fees. Of the eight pastoral leaders of the eight churches, all asked if they could enroll at WTC and be equipped to minister to their people more effectively. My answer was: "Get in your written application and pray for the Lord's provision of school fees. Yes we have room for you, but you must be able to pay the fees."

Pray as Dave teaches Introduction to Missions for next Seminary module (January 19 to 31).

Pray for the start of the college semester on February 2 that pastors will be educated and equipped to serve in Africa.

Praise God for His wonderful, and almost miraculous provision of new, expanded facilities as phase 1 in completed!

Pray the local churches can minister effectively to the orphan children in their area.

Pray for stamina, protection, and effectiveness in ministry for Dave and Darleen.

Additional Missions News
Uganda Children's Sponsorship Program: We are pleased to announce that as a result of our fund raising efforts last September at the Missions Faire, we are able to sponsor 6 students this coming year. The school year commences in February and goes until December and the fees will be applied to tuition, a uniform and a daily hot meal. We are sponsoring students ranging from Pre-K through Secondary School. Their communities range from rural to poor suburb-type to the slums. Some attend well-established churches and at least one attends a new church-plant in a slum. All of the students attend a local Presbyterian church in their community and hear the Word of God preached. Pray these students: Christopher, Peace, Gideon, Frederick, Esther and Sara will be blessed by our gift and they will have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. See the back table for photographs and guidelines, if your child would like to correspond with a student.
